    Jed's Canon 650D. Review at dpreview.com

Before buying an expensive digital camera, check dpreview.com to see how it compares!

Benefits of a D-SLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera include a variety of lens choices to best capture the subject.

In addition to the 'kit' 18-55mm zoom lens it came with I usually carry a 50mm prime which does not zoom but the simpler design gives great sharp and fast images even in low light; a long 75-300mm zoom for distance shots; and my quirky lensbaby 'tilt-shift'. A spare battery and SD card are always good to have.

    Sensor sizes

DSLRs are available with large professional 'full frame' sensors to gather as much light as possible - these lenses and cameras are marked with a red dot.

Canon also market a cheaper range of cameras and lenses with smaller APS-C (C for crop) sensors marked with a white square.

You can use red dot lenses with either, but white square lenses only work on the smaller sensors and cannot be fitted to a full frame camera. If you use red dot lenses with a compact sensor camera, you need to multiply the 'length' of the lens by a factor of 1.6 so my red dot 75-300mm lens is effectively a 120-480mm lens when mounted on the 650D with crop sensor.

    Bob Atkins explains sensor size.
