First Week - Adobe Photoshop

We will go through the basics by a combination of demonstration and hands-on practice. As your skills increase during the course there should be progressively less demonstration and more time for you to exercise your skills, with help as required.

Session 1: Introductions
Welcome to Totton College.

Meet your tutor and fellow students.
Some form filling and picture taking (sorry).

Log-in to the PCs.
Find and open Adobe Photoshop by selecting from the Start Menu at bottom left of your screen.

Introduction to Photoshop
Open sample images 'cmyk balloons' and 'Rockies'.
These are hidden inside a folder called 'Samples', itself in a folder called 'Goodies', which is in 'Adobe Photoshop 5.0' in the 'Adobe' folder in 'Programs' on your C drive.

  • Emphasis on Selection tools such as Lasso and Magic wand
  • Photomontage - cutting out part of one photograph and adding it to another.

Draw round the balloon with the Lasso tool. Then hold down the Control key so that the scissors symbol appears and drag the balloon to the second picture and release. To move the balloon once there, hold down the Control key and drag. If you make a mistake hold down the Control key and press Z. If that is not enough, also hold down the alt key!

To remove the extra sky around the balloon, use the magic wand with tolerance set to about 26 and click on the area you wish to remove. To add to your selection, hold down the shift key as you draw the extra part withe the lasso. To remove, hold down the alt key instead. Once all the unwanted area is selected, press the backspace key to delete it.
