Free Web space
can be obtained from Europacom TCP using their southsurf.com service.

This will give you 15MB, no ads and no requirement to phone their number so it also works from home broadband and most corporate and college connections.

Your Web address will be: www.southsurf.com/users/yourchoice or www.southsurf.com/~yourchoice
where yourchoice is whatever you choose for 'e-mail' in the application form. (you can replace users/ with a tilde ~)

This link will take you to the southsurf.com subscription form

Leave a few minutes after submitting the form and then you should be able to upload your site.

In Dreamweaver, Site > Edit Sites...   under Remote Info, choose:

Access: FTP (file transfer protocol)
FTP Host: ftp.southsurf.com
Host Directory: leave empty

Login: yourchoice
(whatever you chose for 'e-mail' in the application form, in my case jednet as shown below)
Password: as allocated.

Don't click the 'Save' box off until you have finished a session, or you just have to type it again...)

When you are ready to buy a domain name or extra hosting space and services or for broadband please remember Europacom TCP

Troubleshooting:
If you are on a networked connection try 'passive ftp' to attempt upload through the firewall (works from Totton College, but not from Southampton City College as they allow no open ftp port).

Rarely you may receive a 530 login error when you first try to upload your site - contact Europacom as they need to tweak the automated password info at their end in this case. Take advantage of this to choose a more memorable password!

Some notes on setting up a site in Dreamweaver

surfree.co.uk accounts
TCP has closed the domain name surfree.co.uk
Your surfree sites still exist, but your Web address has changed to www.southsurf.com/users/yourchoice

To update your site, you need to edit your sites under Remote Info to change your ftp host from one.surfree.co.uk to ftp.southsurf.com, otherwise you may receive a 'data quota' error. Login and Password are as before.

Once someone has found your site, relative links will work fine, but any absolute links of the http://www.surfree.co.uk/users/yourchoice variety must be changed to http://www.southsurf.com/users/yourchoice
