ABC Level 3 Award in Desktop Publishing Skills

Unit Summary
This award will enable candidates to develop the skills and knowledge in the application of digital software for basic publishing outcomes. Candidates will explore and apply key principles of layout and design and apply in a context that will enable them to produce effective designs using industry standard software.
Outcomes and Assessment Criteria
To pass this unit, candidates should be able to demonstrate they can:
- Use appropriate software tools to produce documents for printed or electronic communication
- Apply principles of layout and design to the production of visual communication outcomes
- Incorporate digital images and text within documents to achieve communication intentions
- Manage and store digital documents using appropriate storage media
- Plan and organise a small-scale design project
Content
An indication of typical areas of learning includes:
- Software skills – industry standard image and text editing software used for DTP tasks; use of key tools and functions within the software; integration of image and text within documents
- Principles of lay-out and design – basic grids, components of documents (Headlines, subheadings, body-text, headers and footers), pagination, sequences and flow of information; text-image relationship
- Managing and storing digital files – appropriate formats for software used; variety of storage media; using back-ups, saving work in progress
- Planning and organising projects – time-scale, research requirements, developing solutions, producing and presenting final designs
Assessment Evidence
Candidates will present a portfolio of work, which should include:
- Examples of technical exercises using various tools and functions of software
- Notes and worksheets showing planning and ideas development linked to small-scale design project
